WBP Reader's Essentials

WBP Reader's Essentials

A must-read for first-year students and doctoral students (and beyond)! Here you will find essential information that will help you make full use of our Library's resources and services during your studies at the UJ WPiA.

From enrollment in the Library, through valuable advice and rules for using the Lending and Reading Rooms, to your happy graduation and thus closing your library account. Just like that, right at your fingertips!

You are welcome to visit the WBP Lending Library in person during the Library's opening hours. We are located in Wróblewski Collegium, at 2 Olszewskiego Street, on the first floor.

To enroll, you need, as a UJ student, an electronic student card (ELS) or, as a UJ doctoral student, an electronic doctoral student card (ELD). Once your library account is established, it will be your library card (you will find your library card number on the card under the barcode). On subsequent visits to our Library, all you need to do is show us your ID card and you will be able to borrow books to take home or use the journals and book collection on site in the Reading Room.

A student's library account is valid for one academic year, while a doctoral student's library account is valid for one calendar year. So plan your visit to the Library accordingly to update your account annually.

You will probably find most of the books you need directly in the Lending Library. Come, see what is available on the shelves and choose to borrow it. Learn more about the Lending Library's book collection and its arrangement.

If you want to check in advance whether the item you are looking for is in our Library and available, use the JU Library Catalog. If you see in the copy description of a given title the marking "WBP-Lending" and the status "Available" - we invite you to the Lending Library, where you can find the book on the shelf yourself or with the help of our staff.

The borrowing of each work must be registered at the desk of the librarian on duty.

If you are a full-time or part-time student, you can borrow a maximum of 5 books for 150 days.

If you are a doctoral student - 10 books per 150 days.

Postgraduate and ERASMUS students can borrow 4 books for 1 month.

Bring the books directly to the Lending Library or, in exceptional cases, send them by mail to the Library's address, necessarily with acknowledgement of receipt, which will ensure that we have received them. If you have borrowed books from other libraries, we advise you to check whether the books returned to us are definitely from WBP (they should have the appropriate markings).

Log in through the JU Library Catalog to your library user account, where you will see a record and history of each loan until the book is returned.

If you have trouble accessing your user account in the system, or for other reasons want to check something out through us, you can call the Lending Library (12 663 11 59), send an email to: wbp@uj.edu.pl or ask a librarian on duty on the spot in the Lending Library or Reading Room.

Remember that the renewal of each book must be done before the deadline for its return. Unless you return it early, you will receive by email to your university mailbox a system reminder of the upcoming return date (5 days in advance). It's best not to delay the extension then. You should also know that holding even one book blocks on your account the ability to roll over all other borrowed works.

You can prolong return deadlines in several ways:

  • by yourself after logging in to your user account in the JU Library Catalog (command "Prolong"). You will receive a confirmation of your prolongation in your mailbox,
  • in person at the Lending Library or by phone by calling: 12 663 11 59 - via e-mail by sending a request to: wbp@uj.edu.pl.

In the situation of a blockage in the system to make an independent renewal, it is possible to contact an employee of our Lending Library.

If you do not return a book on time, your library account will be blocked. Blocking your account also prevents you from using the Reading Room.

In addition, for late return of a borrowed volume, you will be charged 0.30 PLN/day for each calendar day started. However, if you return the book within the first 10 days after the return date, the fee is not charged (calendar days are taken into account, including library closing days).

First, take a look at the full-text databases purchased by our Department and the University (necessarily LEX and Lexoteka or Legalis). You may find that the books you are looking for and many other materials you may be interested in are available to you digitally. You can decide where you will use them, in the Library or at home, by logging in to a particular database according to specific access rules. You can learn more about legal databases and how to access each of them in the Legal Databases and Services tab.

Secondly, remember that you can't borrow all the collections WBP has outside, so you won't find them in the Lending Library. Many thousands of books (especially those we have in single copy) and about 150 subscribed periodicals (including foreign ones), are located in the Reading Room and in the Library's warehouses. They, too, are available to you, but only on-site in the Reading Room.

Third, like any UJ student you have the right to borrow books from the Jagiellonian Library, use this opportunity.

Ideally, you should use the JU Library Catalog to check the location and availability of each copy of a particular title that is in our Library's collection. If you see the location "WBP-Reading Room" next to the copy description - go straight to the Reading Room, it should be on the library shelf (possibly someone is already using it).

The location of the copy "WBP-Magazine" means that you can also use this book (or magazine issue) in the Reading Room, but it is necessary to place an order in advance through the library system (that is, through the JU Library Catalog).

For more information about the possible locations of WBP collections and the rules of their availability, including at our two branches: WBP-Historical Law Cathedral (9 Golebia St.) and WBP-Section of Intellectual Property Law (19 Józefa St.), can be found on the Catalogs page, under the JU Library Catalog tab.

After receiving an e-mail informing you that the ordered item has been put on the reservation shelf for you, report to the WBP Reading Room during the Library's opening hours within three working days. After this time, the order will be canceled and the work will return to the warehouse.

We process orders on a regular basis on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Orders received by the Library after 7:30 p.m. on a weekday or after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday will be processed on the next business day.

At your request, we reserve a work ordered from the warehouse if you want to use it on subsequent days, without having to order again. We do not reserve items from the book collection located directly in the Reading Room, they return to their places after use.

You can use all the books and magazines that are placed in free access on the shelves on the spot by yourself, without ordering in advance. You walk up to the shelf and choose! In the Reading Room, we provide access to, among other things, all WBP novelties and foreign literature (for more information about the collection in the Reading Room and its arrangement, see the rules for using the Reading Room).

In the Reading Room you can use databases and other electronic resources of the UJ on your own devices (WiFi available) or on library computers.

You can also study from your own materials (bring in books and magazines, however, report them to the librarian).

Every student and doctoral student of the UJ WPiA with an active WBP library account is entitled to use the Reading Room. If you are not enrolled in our Library or have not yet activated your library account for the academic year, go to the Lending Library first and do so.

Every visit to the Reading Room must be registered, approach the librarian on duty for this purpose. All you need is your student ID card, you will be asked/asked to show it.

Leave your outer garments, backpacks and bags in the locker room (it is on the first floor of the building) or in the locker opposite the Reading Room. You will receive the key to your own locker at registration from the librarian on duty. Don't forget to return it when you finish working in the Reading Room for the day.

Familiarize yourself with the rules for using the Reading Room.

The reading room is equipped with professional scanners with OCR (optical character recognition) mechanism. You have the opportunity to scan materials from our Library on your own, free of charge, for personal use. It is also allowed to photograph them with your own equipment.

Being a person with a mobility disability, you may need a suitable adjustment of table top height and space. We offer you a suitably adapted workstation. You can also borrow a library laptop to work on your own for the duration of your stay in the Reading Room.

For the visually impaired, the computer workstation is equipped with earphones (you can use your own) and dedicated Speechify software, allowing you to read texts found, for example, in legal databases purchased by the Faculty (including LEX, Legalis, Swisslex) and many other databases funded by the University and made available through the Jagiellonian Library, as well as from the resources of the UJ Repository and the Jagiellonian Digital Library.

A water bowl is provided in our Library for the assistance dog.

You can read about the accessibility of the Library building and other facilities for accessing library collections and services in the accessibility tab for people with special needs.

  • You can offer to buy a book or other materials you need if they are not in the Library's collection and are not available in the databases. Place your order on the electronic form available after logging in on our website or on the paper form you will find at the librarian on duty in the Lending Library or Reading Room.
Although by reading this guide you have already learned a lot, nevertheless it is not a substitute for on-site training in the Library and the opportunity to talk to you directly. You are welcome to attend training sessions.

From time to time or on an ongoing basis, libraries make the necessary selection of book collections, withdraw items that are redundant in the library for various reasons (such as too many and unused copies). However, these works can still be valuable and useful to a potential Reader.

If you would like to enrich your home library completely free of charge with the legal publications withdrawn from the WBP that interest you, please visit the Catalog room (next to the Lending Library). Books and materials to take away are lined on shelves and tables. Give them another life!

Return the books to the Lending Library. Pay the due amount if a late return fee has been charged.

Book lost? It is best to repurchase the same item, and if this is not possible, report the problem to the Lending Library, we will advise what to do in such a situation (or see the rules and regulations of WBP UJ).

As soon as you have no obligations on your library user account, it is possible to close it. You do not need to come in person, it is enough if you send your request by e-mail to: wbp@uj.edu.pl. We will check the balance of the account and close it, you will receive the applicable information and confirmation from us back.

The library account should be closed before receiving the diploma from the University.

After leaving the walls of the Alma Mater, we welcome our graduates to the Library, but already under different conditions.
